SMS loyalty and rewards programs compared by integrations, fee structure and management for small in-store and online independent retailers

Best SMS Loyalty Programs for Small Retailers Compared

Barbara Casey, Founder & CEO of Mobile High 5, SMS marketing and loyalty expert for owners of growing businesses
Barbara Casey - Mobile High 5

Barbara Casey, founder of Mobile High 5, brings 30 years of customer retention marketing and loyalty expertise. She helps independent businesses bring customers back through managed SMS and loyalty, giving them big-brand marketing power without adding more to their plate..

A retailer can buy software that counts every point and still have no plan for bringing customers back. The hard part is deciding which behavior to reward, when to reach out, what to say and whether the effort changed anything. Those are marketing decisions, not software settings.

I have spent more than 30 years in direct and loyalty marketing, including work on frequent buyer programs for AT&T and American Express. I founded Mobile High 5 to give independent businesses access to that kind of retention expertise, along with a team that puts the plan into practice. This article compares our approach with Square Loyalty, Marsello, TapMango, and Attentive paired with LoyaltyLion. I have an interest in one of the options; the other descriptions rely on published vendor materials, and features and prices should be confirmed before purchase.

The Five Options At A Glance

OptionRewards and POSText relationshipStrategy and ongoing work
Mobile High 5Visit or spend; published integrations plus tablet or staff virtual kioskTwo-way SMS; mobile widget for offers and balance; text keyword or optional home-screen shortcutBarbara sets the retention strategy using 30+ years of experience; her team executes, measures and refines it
Square LoyaltyVisit, spend, item or category rewards in SquareAutomatic loyalty texts; Cash App or hosted web status page; promotional texting is separateMerchant, unless it hires outside help
MarselloPrimarily spend based; supported POS and ecommerce systemsEmail and SMS; SMS campaigns require a separately billed add-onMerchant plans and operates campaigns
TapMangoVisit or spend rewards; published Toast, Clover and Square integrationsSMS, email and push; confirm reply and MMS workflowMerchant, with vendor onboarding and support
Attentive + LoyaltyLionLoyaltyLion provides rewards; verify POS fitAttentive provides SMS, MMS, email and conversational textingTwo products and separate quotes; define campaign ownership

This is a comparison of buying approaches, not five identical products. In particular, Attentive is a messaging platform connected to a separate loyalty engine, not a standalone points program.

How To Choose An SMS Loyalty and Rewards Program

Start With The Reward Behavior

Visit-based rewards are simple when customers spend similar amounts each time. A coffee shop might reward a tenth visit. Spend-based rewards usually fit boutiques, wine shops and specialty retailers better because one customer might spend $20 and another $200. You can also reward a specific category or item. Ask staff to explain the proposed rule in one sentence. If they cannot, customers may struggle too.

Test the actual POS and online journey

Ask for a demonstration with your own checkout flow: joining, earning, balance lookup, reward notification and redemption. Check what happens when a customer shops in the store and online. A POS integration can remove manual steps, but the exact data exchange and checkout behavior differ by product and installation. Also ask who implements the connection and what it costs. Understand who will troubleshoot when issues arise.

Mobile High 5 implements its published Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Lightspeed, Heartland and other supported integrations for a small setup charge. Those connections can combine in-store and online loyalty activity. Its API library is available for a custom POS or ecommerce connection, but a client developer must implement a custom connection. Mobile High 5 can also provide a developer for an additional charge. A customer-facing tablet or browser-based staff virtual kiosk offers a path where a direct integration is unavailable.

Separate loyalty alerts from marketing

An automatic text saying “you earned a reward” is useful. Retention also requires a plan for the customer who has stopped visiting, the VIP who deserves recognition and the shopper whose birthday is approaching. Ask whether texts are central to those journeys or whether engagement primarily depends on email or a separately priced marketing module. Request a demonstration of replies to a promotional message, not just a screenshot of an SMS campaign builder.

Ask for the price of an SMS and an MMS sent to your actual list, including any usage charges and carrier fees. Mobile High 5 counts a standard one-credit SMS as one credit and an MMS as two. Other providers use different pricing models, so compare a realistic month of sending rather than subscription prices alone.

Measure a purchase, not just a click

A useful report shows repeat visits, reactivated shoppers and redeemed rewards. Mobile High 5 sends offers through a link to a mobile coupon widget using a unique code tied to a customer. A customer can view an offer and points balance, see a map and tap for directions without downloading an app. A keyword text can send a return link to the balance. A welcome version of the widget can prompt the customer to save a shortcut to their phone’s home screen. The branded home-screen icon opens the widget later so the customer can check for current offers without searching for an old text or installing a native app. Unique codes help connect an offer to redemption and, when matched to the sale, to a purchase. The widget can record the redemption location for a multi-location merchant, prompt a review and let a customer share an offer through a built-in share functionality. A recipient must opt in before viewing a shared offer making this a terrific way to expand your contact list.

An optional mobile wallet pass can surface a saved offer near a store when the relevant location and device permissions are enabled. These features matter most when someone plans the offer and checks whether it brought customers back.

For alcohol, test the age gate

A wine, beer or spirits retailer should make each vendor demonstrate signup from every route, including the website, checkout and text keyword. Enter an underage birth date and see whether enrollment stops before the person becomes an SMS subscriber. Confirm approval of your proposed alcohol content and number type in writing. Mobile High 5 offers date-of-birth gating for age-restricted opt-in. Attentive permits an alcohol exception under its content policy when a carrier-compliant age gate is implemented; that policy alone does not demonstrate how a combined Attentive and LoyaltyLion signup works. Marsello’s published SMS guidance prohibits campaigns for merchants selling alcohol. Understand that simply collecting a customer’s birthday is not the same as an age gate and will not satisfy regulations.

The Five Approaches In More Detail

Mobile High 5: A retention strategist and the team to carry out the plan

Mobile High 5 starts with the decisions that shape results. What should a customer do more often? Which reward is valuable enough to change that behavior without giving away margin? Which customers need a reminder, which deserve recognition and which would have returned without an offer? I use more than 30 years in direct and loyalty marketing to design those choices for each business. Our team then builds, sends, measures and adjusts the program with the owner.

That is a different relationship from buying a dashboard and receiving setup help. A retailer gets experienced judgment on reward economics, campaign timing, customer segments and the next test to run. If a promotion gets redemptions but brings back customers who already shop weekly, we should question whether it created an additional visit. If an offer reaches lapsed customers but few redeem it, we should change the offer, audience or timing. The software records activity; we use that evidence to make better decisions.

Mobile High 5 supports visit-based and spend-based rewards, two-way SMS, webforms, text-to-win campaigns, ten custom data fields and integrated review requests. Our team writes the campaigns, creates supporting graphics at no additional design charge, builds automations, checks links and redemptions, and reviews performance. A mobile coupon widget can show offers and balances, while a configurable welcome widget lets customers save a home-screen shortcut. Published integrations can connect in-store and online activity. If integration isn’t possible a tablet or staff virtual kiosk can be used where appropriate.

The strategy changes with the store. A wine shop should not receive the same frequency goal and reward as a pizza restaurant. In a Mobile High 5 food-business program, one loyalty reward achieved 63% redemption. For a retailer, we analyzed more than $1 million in recorded loyalty-member purchases.

Loyalty-member purchase value was 44% higher than the weekday-adjusted baseline on days a text was sent. These are examples of specific clients and not a promised result.

Mobile High 5 costs more than a bare software subscription because strategic direction and ongoing execution are included. Compare that price with the complete cost of a platform, texting, creative work and someone qualified to decide what to do next. If you already have an experienced retention marketer on staff, another platform may be a good fit. If you want that expertise applied to your business, that is the reason to consider Mobile High 5.

Square Loyalty

Square is an easy operational fit for a store already using Square POS. It supports visit, spend, item and category earning, sends automatic loyalty notices and keeps the transaction close to checkout. Square also has separate promotional text marketing. A customer can participate with a phone number without connecting Cash App. Square sends a welcome text with a status link, and eligible digital receipts can link to the loyalty status page. By default the status experience points toward Cash App; a merchant can turn that integration off to direct customers to a Square-hosted web page instead. On that page, the customer enters a phone number and a code received by SMS to see progress and available rewards. Square also documents an optional Apple Wallet loyalty pass on eligible iPhones.

Choose Square if you want a straightforward program inside Square and can own the ongoing campaigns. Its balance is accessible away from the store, but the customer has to keep or find a link, use Cash App if enabled, or sign in on the hosted page. Ask Square to demonstrate the exact path a customer takes two weeks after a purchase, including the wallet option, reply workflow for promotional texts, messaging charges and the age-gated setup if you sell alcohol. Then ask who will prompt the next visit rather than wait for the customer to check a balance.Turning on Square Loyalty is a starting point. Making it an active program that brings customers back requires staff time to plan offers, create campaigns and manage follow-through. With Mobile High 5, that strategy and ongoing management are built into the service.

Marsello

Marsello can be convenient when its POS and ecommerce connections match your business. It combines spend-based points with email, segments and marketing automations. Its documentation says SMS campaigns require a separately billed add-on. Its published help guidance also says marketing SMS does not have a reply-to number and that MMS is unavailable. For a retailer that values a two-way text conversation and picture offers, those details change the comparison.

A Lightspeed merchant should certainly look at Marsello, but a familiar POS connection is not proof that it will produce the strongest retention program. Compare how the customer joins and redeems, who will create ongoing campaigns and the total cost. Marsello’s published SMS guidance excludes merchants selling alcohol from SMS campaigns.

TapMango

TapMango offers points, punch cards, referrals, memberships, a branded app and a customer-facing tablet. Its published integrations include Toast, Clover and Square. It can reward visits or spend. Those are useful options when a business needs one of those exact POS connections or a branded app. Mobile High 5 also has a branded customer-facing tablet and offers a staff-facing virtual kiosk for businesses that prefer to work without a tablet at the counter.

Ask TapMango to demonstrate the full POS journey, campaign replies, MMS availability and who produces the campaigns after onboarding. If Toast is central, include the required Toast suite and integration conditions in the cost comparison. For an alcohol business, obtain written confirmation of the signup gate and permitted message content.

Attentive paired with LoyaltyLion

Attentive deserves a place here because it is a serious SMS and email platform with conversational messaging and strategic support. LoyaltyLion supplies the points and rewards engine. Their documented integration can pass balances and events into Attentive for targeted journeys and award points for SMS signup when identity requirements are met. It is a capable route for a retailer with an established marketing team or an existing LoyaltyLion program.

The two subscriptions make the cost comparison especially important. LoyaltyLion advertises Classic at $199 a month for 500 orders, but its Attentive integration guide says the connection requires the custom-priced Plus plan. Attentive prices by subscriber count, message volume, selected channels and optional AI tools without publishing a standard monthly dollar amount. The $199 price is therefore not a valid starting price for this combination. Obtain separate written quotes for LoyaltyLion Plus and Attentive, including POS locations, setup, SMS, MMS, carrier charges and the actual services each team will perform. LoyaltyLion’s guidance says an email match is required to award points for an SMS signup. Mobile High 5 does not charge based on order volume. Messaging costs increase as you reach more customers or send more texts, while your management fee stays the same.

Both companies offer support and strategic guidance. The practical question is who will write offers, design graphics, send messages, handle replies and change the plan as results come in. Get that scope in writing. For alcohol promotion, require a live demonstration of compliant age-gated enrollment across the connected systems.

With Mobile High 5, SMS, loyalty and dedicated expert management come from one provider, with someone actively creating campaigns, tracking results and giving customers reasons to return.

Questions That Expose The Real Differences

What does a customer see after earning a reward

Ask each provider to send the actual reward to your phone. Does it arrive as a text, an email, a push alert or a notification only after you open an app? Can you see what you have earned without creating another account? Try the balance lookup two weeks later, too. Square provides a link in its welcome text and on eligible digital receipts. Its hosted status page asks for a phone number and SMS code when Cash App integration is off; it also offers an optional Apple Wallet pass on eligible iPhones. Mobile High 5 includes the points balance in its linked mobile coupon widget, a keyword text can return a link to that balance, and a configurable welcome widget can prompt customers to save a home-screen shortcut for checking available offers later. Attentive can personalize messages with LoyaltyLion data, but you should still test the consumer-facing rewards journey.

Who handles the response to a text

A shop owner may think two-way texting simply means replies are technically possible. In practice someone must receive the question, know the offer terms and answer promptly. Try texting “Can I use this tomorrow?” to the same number that sent a test campaign. Ask where that reply lands, who is notified, whether the interaction is included in your plan and who is responsible after hours. Attentive has genuine conversational capabilities. Marsello’s published marketing-SMS guidance says its campaigns do not provide a reply-to number. TapMango and Square deserve a demonstration of the specific product and plan you would buy. Mobile High 5 supports two-way SMS as part of its managed program with incoming texts at no charge; agree on the response workflow before launch.

What is included after the launch call

Onboarding can configure an account, train staff and launch a welcome automation. The more consequential question is who will make the marketing decisions six months later. Ask who chooses the reward threshold, decides when to segment an audience, notices a weak redemption pattern and proposes the next test. Then ask who writes the messages, designs images, checks links, monitors opt-outs and fixes an automation disrupted by a POS update. Some vendors offer strategic or premium services, so request the actual scope of work. Access to a customer success manager does not by itself tell you who owns those decisions or executes the campaigns.

The strongest use of your own data might be modest. A boutique could notice customers buying gifts every November and send a reminder before the season. A bottle shop might invite customers who joined through an event to a related tasting, after confirming permitted content and age-gated consent. A food business might ask whether the free item on a tenth visit encourages an eleventh visit. Each example starts with a customer behavior and a reason to return, then uses the software to deliver and measure the idea.

What does the complete price buy

Put every option on the same worksheet. Include monthly platform fees, minimum commitments, subscriber or order tiers, SMS and MMS volume, carrier fees, each POS location, setup work, creative production and the time your staff will spend. If a consultant or agency will manage the platform, add that cost as well. Compare a quiet month and a busy promotion month. A cheap base subscription can become expensive if your team must do the work; a managed service can also cost more than you need if you already have a dedicated retention marketer.

For example, a retailer considering Attentive plus LoyaltyLion should request a Plus quote based on actual order volume and an Attentive quote for its actual list and sends. A retailer considering Marsello should price the SMS add-on and check whether its lack of MMS or campaign replies fits the intended program. A Mobile High 5 proposal should specify message allowance, any extra integration work and which ongoing services are included. The goal is a decision about total operating cost and ownership, not a contest over the lowest headline number.

Which should you choose

Want an experienced loyalty marketer to design and actively manage a retention program for your store, ecommerce business or both? Choose Mobile High 5 for SMS, loyalty and dedicated expert management from one provider, with supported integrations that connect online and in-store purchases.

  • Already on Square and want an uncomplicated POS-native program you will manage? Start with Square Loyalty.

  • Want an easy route through a supported POS and plan to set up automations and run campaigns in-house? Demonstrate Marsello and understand its SMS restrictions and total cost, including its prohibition on alcohol-related texts.

  • Need a specific TapMango POS connection, membership feature or branded app? Test TapMango at your own counter.

  • Have an ecommerce marketing team and want advanced text and email orchestration around LoyaltyLion? Quote the Attentive and LoyaltyLion Plus combination.

Before signing, ask every vendor to show one real customer going from signup to a redeemed reward. If you sell online and in-store, ask them to demonstrate how purchases in both channels contribute to that customer’s rewards. Then ask who will decide whether the reward is the right one, which customers should receive the next message and what result would justify changing course. A working checkout flow matters. Experienced judgment and ongoing management turn it into an active retention program.

Whether you sell online, in-store or both, schedule a 15-minute SMS loyalty strategy call with Mobile High 5 to explore a program that connects your customer experience and gives shoppers reasons to return.
