The Challenge For Restaurants
If you’re thinking SMS = app notifications, they are not the same.
Most restaurants rely on social media, POS loyalty programs, or app notifications to drive repeat visits. All of these depend on customer behavior that restaurants can’t control: app downloads, notification settings, email open rates, algorithms and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The result is predictable. Customers often don’t see rewards until they are already in the restaurant. Loyalty becomes passive, rewarding behavior after the visit instead of motivating the next one.
Why App Notifications and Email Fall Short
App notifications and POS-based loyalty systems rely on intent access and user-enabled notifications. Open rates typically range from 4-20%, making them unreliable for time sensitive communication.
Email adds even more delay and uncertainty. Messages may be buried, ignored or seen days later (if at all). In all cases, the restaurant loses control of when or if the message is seen.
Passive loyalty systems wait for chance. They do not create urgency or intent.
The SMS Strategy
We implemented an SMS-first loyalty program designed to notify customers before they decided where they eat.
Customers joined through an in-store kiosk, QR code or staff managed check-in manager. Visits were tracked automatically. When a reward milestone was reached, customer received a text message delivered directly to their locked phone screen.
No app.
No Wi-Fi required.
No delay.
Turn rewards into visit drivers, not checkout surprises.
Why SMS Changed Customer Behavior
Unlike app notifications or email, SMS does not require an internet connection, app installation, or enabled notifications. SMS Messages are delivered instantly, even when a phone is locked and offline.
SMS open rates average 98%, making it the most reliable channel for reaching customers at the right moment.
As rich messaging continues to evolve, SMS is also closing the branding gap traditionally associated with apps, without the friction that prevents adoption.
For restaurants, this means consistent reach, predictable timing and behavior change that happens before the visit.

What This Proves
Active loyalty changes behavior. Passive loyalty waits.
By alerting customers that a reward was available before their next visit, the restaurant increased visit frequency without discounting each transaction.
Most customers returned because they were reminded, not because they were chasing discounts.
Results
Over the first 12 Months:
- 7,498 total check-ins
- 633 customers visited 2+ times
- 392 customers visited 6+ times
- 1,336 rewards redeemed
- Only 52 opt-outs
Most visits occurred without a reward, proving that SMS reminders increased visit frequency rather than erode margins.
Revenue Impact
Using a conservative $12 average ticket, repeat visits generated nearly $90,000 in additional revenue, driven by SMS-triggered loyalty behavior.
This revenue came from increased visit frequency, not blanket discounting.
Return On Investment (ROI)
At an estimated 12:1 ROI, the program significantly exceeded the commonly accepted 5:1 benchmark for effective marketing spend.
For every dollar invested, the restaurant earned approximately twelve.
Results will vary, but the behavior shift is consistent.
